Processing the loss of a pregnancy has been traditionally done in private and most often, on one’s own. After going through the heartbreak, isolation and pain of their own miscarriages, the midwives and health practitioners at Tourmaline Birth and Wellness Collective in Pacific Beach came together to create Box for Loss, a pregnancy loss support box.

“We had a client with us who miscarried and we supported her through that time,” says Josie Petrich, licensed midwife and Tourmaline Collective co-owner. “Then she came to us. She wanted to start something to help people because through her story she realized that so many people were having miscarriages and going through them in silence and experiencing shame and guilt.”

Pregnancy Loss Support Box

To create Box for Loss, each member of the Tourmaline Collective team drew on their area of expertise (midwifery, nutrition, acupuncture, herbal medicine) to hand-select the physical and emotional support items found in the box. Each item in Box for Loss is holistic, non-toxic, organic and sustainably created by women-owned businesses.

The Body + Spirit Recovery Box includes:

  • Herbal teas + tinctures
  • Essential oils + CBD salves
  • Postpartum underwear + womb warmer
  • Vaginal steaming herbs
  • Rose quartz + womb meditation
  • Electrolyte powder

A smaller version of the box called the Spirit Recovery bag is also available.

All boxes can be ordered online and can include a personalized message to the person experiencing the loss.

“One in four women will experience a miscarriage – it’s that common,” says Allison Tartari, licensed midwife and Tourmaline Collective co-owner. “So you’ve either had a miscarriage or you know someone very close to you that has suffered a loss. That’s a really high number and that’s a lot of people that need support. But just because many people have experienced this type of loss does not mean that it’s any easier for each of us to handle individually.”

Beyond the physical products, Box for Loss also includes informational guides on what to expect, where to find support and information for your partner.

“There is a letter in there for the partner that teaches what to say to be supportive, what not to say aside from being present,” says Tartari. “It gives them an idea of what you’re going through and validates their feelings at the same time because they’re also suffering in their own way that’s going to be different than the person that’s suffering the loss but they can feel a part of it and be there to support you.”
